Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
CLE (also known as ‘continuing professional development’) is important to ensure that a lawyer maintains the necessary knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive and component legal advice to clients. In many countries lawyers must complete a minimum number of hours of CLE each year (usually 10).
Because of the lack of available training courses, lawyers in South Pacific countries often have to travel to other countries, such as Fiji, New Zealand, or Australia to attend conferences and training courses. This places a financial strain on lawyers and discourages development of legal skills and expertise.
In an effort to reduce this burden, the South Pacific Lawyers’ Association has entered into agreements with Australian and New Zealand Law Societies to provide access to CLE training courses and seminars for South Pacific Lawyers at reduced rates and continues to seek out partnerships.
Some law societies also offer access to online libraries of seminar papers, DVDs, transcripts, magazines and newsletters related to topical legal issues which can be ordered directly by practitioners.
