Pacific governments urged by journalists to implement Freedom of Information laws

Following the UNDP-organised anti-corruption workshop held prior to the 2nd Pacific Media Summit in Fiji, 20 media professionals from eight Pacific countries have called on regional governments to commit to Freedom of Information legislation, reported the Fiji Times.

The group said reporting on corruption in the Pacific was problematic for journalists. While governments lack the resources to effectively record and publicly report their work, the lack of independent anti-corruption bodies also means journalists are often left unprotected and unwilling to report on politically-sensitive issues.
